Bio:

Cohen grew up in Phoenix, Arizona as part of a large Colombian immigrant family. When her father died in an automobile accident in 1990, she inherited his camera, and as a way to feel closer to his memory. She attended Tufts University in Boston while enrolling in photography classes at the affiliated Boston School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Cohen graduated with a dual major in philosophy and studio art. After college, she spent four years photographing transgendered sex workers along the Panama Canal Zone.

Her grants and awards include an award from Artadia: The Fund for Art and Dialog, a fellowship from The Photography Institute, and residences at the Akademie Schloss Solitude and the MacDowell Colony.

Cohen’s solo exhibitions and performances have been shown in galleries and art institutions in Sweden, France, and Germany, as well as in numerous galleries in the United States. Liz taught at the California College of the Arts and other Bay Area institutions. She received an MFA in photography from the California College of the Arts and Crafts. She currently lives and works in Phoenix, AZ. She is represented by Galerie Laurent Godin in Paris and Lawrimore Project in Seattle.
