WeOwnTV uses traditional documentary and community media approaches to tell the story of a group of teenagers, many of them ex-combatants, and all of who lived through the decade-long civil war in their country. The program involves a community-engaged curriculum in which project participants create and produce their own independent media, ranging in style from documentary and journalism to creative digital storytelling and narrative short films. These pieces explore the issues faced by these youth who deal everyday with the effects of war. Subject matters range from; war time gender violence, the use of children as soldiers, effects of being culturally and physically uprooted, and the growing pains experienced in a country healing from a recent civil war. In providing the technical support, encouragement, and training, these young adults creatively produce their own media and share their experiences and ideas with the world. Beyond the production of a feature documentary that tells this story WeOwnTV develops a means of distribution and support to help these important stories be heard.
